THE IMPORTANCE OF JOURNAL PUBLICATIONS
Journals have been the main medium for reporting medical and scientific
discoveries, inventions, and innovations for generations. Historian
and librarian David Kronick wrote in 1962, "By the last half
of the 19th century all of the important contributions were being
printed in journals." Speaking of offprints, bibliographer
and historian John Neu wrote in 1968, "Offprints, by their
very nature, are scarce from the day of their printing; they seldom
survive the death of the recipient...Certainly after a hundred years,
a scientific [or medical] paper in offprint form is practically
unfindable." More recently, Roger Gaskell explained, "Print
runs of offprints vary widely form a handful to 50 or more."
His advice to medical collectors: "If you see an offprint of
an article, buy it." Please read about our journal
