We are pleased to offer an extraordinary collection of engraved portraits of physicians, surgeons and medical scientists. These original prints date from the 17th to the early 20th century. Most of the portraits printed before 1800 are copper engravings. The majority of 19th century portraits are steel engravings. Most of the portraits produced in the early 20th century are fine photogravures. The Vanity Fair caricatures are colored lithographs. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in medical portraits. Two references are especially useful:
